Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Each is the second chapter of an iconic film saga. The machinations of the looming enemy (The Dark Lord of the Sith/The Necromancer) continued with the appointment of a chief lieutenant (Darth Tyranus/Azog the Defiler) to take command over his forces. Subsequently, that lieutenant deploys another warrior (Jango Fett/Bolg) to see to the assassination of a key figure (Padme Amidala/Thorin Oakenshield) that would further their master's plans and settle an old score for one of that person's rivals. (Nute Gunray/Azog) During this time the mentor figure (Obi-Wan Kenobi/Gandalf the Grey) to the central protagonist (Anakin Skywalker/Bilbo Baggins) finds himself leaving their current mission to go on a separate one to investigate the appearances of mysterious figures (The Bounty Hunters/The Wraiths) who present a threat. An investigation that would eventually lead him to outwardly run down looking place (Geonosis/Dol Guldur) that turns out to be the breeding ground for a massive enemy army. He also finds a one-time ally (Count Dooku/Thrain) who gives a hint to the greater scope of the plan going on under their noses but ultimately find himself held captive and in need of rescue. Meanwhile a romance begins to blossom between a pair of star-crossed lovers (Anakin & Padme/Kili & Tauriel) kept apart by the different worlds in which they reside and one of the heroes (Anakin/Thorin) starts truly showing signs of being corrupted. In the end a group of heroes make a last ditch effort to defeat a powerful enemy (Dooku/Smaug) revealed to be in league with the Dark Lord. However, the attempt is unsuccessful as he manages to fly off and escape. In some way, the coming of a great military conflict is foreshadowed as all these events transpire.
